Big Snow Means a Blank Slate

In January 2021 I was ready to connect with life again. I found a box of seeds from years past and decided a bigger garden was our next step as a family.

By February I had Dave on board enough to go outside with me to “draw” our design in the snow… really.

The snow provided a blank slate for us to just walk out our drawings right there on the ground.

That day wasn’t just about measuring and marking.

It was about the garden we were building – and the life we wanted to start living when the world woke up from its slumber.

We didn’t need to know the right plants or how to grow them. We just needed to start the intention of where we wanted to go.

That summer there were hundreds of decisions to make, thousands of seedlings we grew for ourself and others, shocking events (deer and mosquitos anyone?), and we ended up with business called Fence Post Flower Farm.

But that intentional walk of our garden? It set the tone for the last 5 years of growing as a family.

The winter garden is quiet, it’s resting, and it’s inviting you to intentionally choose what life looks like this year, slowly, thoughtfully, and without hurry.

The garden plans don’t start with a to-list when we have plants in hand, they begin now when we decide, without pressure, how we want to live in our garden this year.

What if you gave yourself the space to reflect, to be honest, and to choose intentionally what your garden looked like for you in this season of life?

What questions would you ask yourself?

What are you craving right now?

Fresh flowers on your kitchen table?

Bees buzzing in your pollinator patch?

Sun warmed tomatoes without the rush of needing to can them.

Something smaller more manageable? Or bigger and allowing the jungle garden to happen so you can focus on your family?

What do you wish you had more of?

What deserves less time or space?

What would you like to leave buried under the snow?

There’s no need to hurry through these thoughts, let them float through your mind as you go through your week. Write them down if it feels good, but there’s nothing heavy to pick up right now.

The sleeping garden is okay. She’s modest so she’ll cover up any bare soil, but that’s a summer conversation.

Today? It’s winter and you have a blank slate so where is your craving taking you?

I hope you enjoy this slow pace to garden planning.
