Years ago I remember seeing a brightly painted colorful mailbox in this whimsical garden on Pinterest.
Inside the mailbox the gardener had her gloves and tools. Genius!
When we built our big garden I said I want my own mailbox!
Little did I know that basic mailboxes cost $20-30, plus a post plus attaching it to… something. Boo.
Cue… Facebook Marketplace.
I found this mailbox listed… with the post… cemented into a 5 gallon bucket!

Mailbox? Check.
On a post? Check.
Moveable? Check.
Price? $20!!! I’m SOLD!!!
Location? Brand new $1.7 million house, it was their temporary mailbox during construction.
** Still giddy from this even 5 years later **
This story has so many aspects I’ve talked about over the years, how I use it can be found in this blog post.
If we were chatting outside on one of these beautifully sunny Michigan days what would you tell me you wanted in your garden?
Hit reply and tell me what you think.
Your cheeky garden friend,
Laura
P.S. Why do I mention the house was $1.7 million? Because it reminds me that we all start somewhere. This big beautiful house had new grass seed and I was picking up their mailbox that had served them during the build. It serves as a reminder that we all start from the ground up… with a 5 gallon bucket and some concrete in the mix. Nothing fancy, just functional and real.
